The two highest-value “journey stops” in decreasing the costs of cancer care lie in care management, and specifically navigation, to avoid unnecessary admissions and late-line, ineffective therapies. Christine Sawicki explained how nurse-led care management can be optimized and how it is critical to engage patients at all steps of the cancer journey. Costs for unmanaged patients average $780 more per patient per quarter and can be as much as $2,280 higher with late-intervention palliative care.
